The platform is rolling out a new feature that enables them to reduce the volume of AI-created content appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the platform revealed that it presently contains over 1 thousand million AI videos.
Pilot Phase and Launch
This change is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a widespread launch. This shift comes amid a rise in content created by AI, driven by emerging content generation software.
The Broader AI Trend
It has been noted that approximately one in 10 of the quickest rising content creators on a competing service only show AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this material is deemed mass-produced AI material, a phrase for inferior, mass-produced content that is typically absurd or surreal.
“We know from our community that many people enjoy content produced via AI tools, from computer-generated images to educational videos, and we intend to offer the community the option to adjust the amount of that, according to their own likes,” stated a spokesperson.
Scale of AI Content
The service disclosed that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its service identified as artificially created. In total, more than 100 m videos are submitted to the app each day, making clips made by AI a relatively small percentage of its overall inventory.
Customizing Your Feed
Members will be able to limit or boost the amount of artificial media they see by opening the topic control setting in the application and choosing “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that can already be controlled under the setting cover politics, fashion, beauty, and choreography.
Platform Guidelines
The platform’s guidelines require users to label lifelike artificially created content, and it prohibits harmful deepfakes of celebrities or crisis events. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is unmarked can be removed under its user guidelines.
Additionally, the platform will henceforth add an artificially created label to content created with its own AI tools, or identified by an cross-platform project for recognizing AI-generated material. This step is intended to stop users from trying to bypass the disclosure requirement.
AI Literacy Programs
TikTok is furthermore establishing a $2m AI literacy fund for specialists and organizations to create learning resources about ethical AI use. This program will benefit educational bodies specializing in training coding and technology.
Platform Protection
The platform has justified its moderation strategy, following discussion over proposals to make redundant hundreds of content moderators in Britain. TikTok is set to eliminate a significant number of roles in its content moderation department in London, with trade unions and internet security professionals voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.
A senior executive stated that human moderation would still have a role, but automated tools can safeguard staff by removing the most harmful content prior to it gets reviewed by people. The company announced a notable drop in explicit and harmful content seen by safety staff over the previous year due to the use of its AI tools.
We believe it is crucial to integrate staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we also think it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to unsafe media as swiftly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is proving valuable work at speed.”
