A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
