From Acclaim to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.

Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric

Administration officials defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the censorship process.

Concerns Prompted by Redactions

While the former president's name and image are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for increased openness.

“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.

Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release

However, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the administration.

The release—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their faces obscured.

But some are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to go on the attack.

“It’s pretty ironic how the political left falsely accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Former President Spokesperson Issues Response

Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding these documents for months only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.

Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted

Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was relatively subdued following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that came before the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the documents' publication.

Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were provided physical binders of files that contained little previously unseen information.
