Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
