Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered many other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say preliminary tests indicate the substance was most likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; officials are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the community for information.
An important representative commented the attack made him stunned and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
